Arbúcies
The municipality of Arbúcies is situated in the middle of a valley on the westernmost side of the county of La Selva. Its landscape is bathed and shaped by the Arbúcies Stream. Located within the Montseny Natural Park, this is a municipality with rich forest land. One of the most characteristic features of the area is water, in the form of rivers, streams and springs. This landscape was a source of inspiration for some of Santiago Rusiñol’s paintings.
The town of Arbúcies is full of hidden corners worth discovering. Catalan modernist buildings stand next to noucentista mansions with an Italian Renaissance influence, built after the Spanish Civil War. Visitors can also explore Romanesque churches such as that of Sant Pere Desplà, which houses some impressive pre-Romanesque paintings, and the churches of Sant Cristòfol de Cerdans, Sant Mateu de Joanet or Santa Maria de Lliors.
Montsoriu Castle is the jewel in the crown of Arbúcies’ architectural heritage. This military fortress, perched at the top of a hill, offers wonderful views of the surrounding area. Montsoriu Castle, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries and once home to the Viscounts of Cabrera, is the most important Gothic castle in Catalonia.
The Ethnological Museum of Montseny, located in the centre of Arbúcies, offers several routes, workshops, visits and educational activities related to the cultural aspects of the Montseny Massif. It also has a room dedicated to Montsoriu Castle, featuring a sizeable scale model of the fortress and a display of objects found in archaeological digs there
