Sils
The municipality of Sils is located in the middle of the plain of La Selva, nestled between fields, right next to Lake Sils.
Sils is perched on a small hill next to the lake with the Parish Church of Santa Maria right in the centre, separating the old quarter from the water. This church, listed in the Architectural Heritage Inventory of Catalonia, dates from 1185 and is built in the baroque and neoclassical style.
The municipality comprises the main town, which has developed around the town hall, and a group of scattered hamlets including Vallcanera Parc or Mallorquines.
One of the main landmarks of the municipality and county is Lake Sils, a very important natural site which, thanks to the richness of its flora and fauna, is included in the Areas of Natural Interest Plan (PEIN) of Catalonia. The huge ecological interest of the Lake Sils can be seen in its richly varied plant life, with the presence of alder groves, watercress beds, snowdrops or juncaceae. Meanwhile, the lake boasts a wide variety of exotic wildlife. On a stroll around the lake, visitors may come across all kinds of species that have made it their home, such as turtles, little bitterns, newts and swamp crawfish. Without a doubt, Lake Sils is the perfect place to discover the great ecological wealth of La Selva and Catalonia.
Last of all, mention must be made of the many walking and cycling routes that can be enjoyed in the area, such as the Lakes Route, a stroll around Lake Sils or the Via Augusta path.
