Puig de Castellet fortified enclosure
This is the only fortified Iberian enclosure in the county of Selva. It is situated at the top of a hill with a commanding view, but in a spot that cannot be seen from the sea. It is thought that its main function was to keep watch of the coast and control the territory, and that it was inhabited by a small detachment of warriors and their families. It was fully excavated between 1975 and 1985. The research carried out concludes that it operated for a short period between 250 and 210 BC and that it depended on a larger settlement, in all likelihood Montbarbat.
It has a surface area of 650 m2, delimited by three sections of wall, with two towers, and contains eleven living areas (almost all dwellings, but also some spaces for community use) attached to the interior of the fortification. There is a large open area in the centre, where silos and storage pits were located. It has been restored and turned into a museum site. It is open to visitors in the summer; at other times of the year visits can be arranged by appointment.
