Argimon Castle
It is said that the destruction ordered by Pere the Ceremonious, the Catalan king, led to the ruin of Argimon Castle. The fact is that this fortification in Riudarenes was one of the first to rise up against the king when he clashed with Bernat III of Cabrera.
Perhaps that is why all that remains today of the oldest castle in the county (dating back to at least 925 AD) is a solitary tower and its pretty chapel, located in a wonderful setting, overlooked by the 18th Sanctuary of Mare de Déu d’Argimon and offering exceptional views of the entire county of Selva.
If you are still curious to find out more about Argimon, make your way to the Roqueta Fort (also known as the Witches’ Tower) close to L’Esparra. This is a well-preserved fortified house dating from the 12th-13th centuries where the castellans of Argimon lived for some time.
