The North Track, also known as the Exile Track, is a Long Distance (212 km) route linking the towns of Mataró in Catalonia and Prada de Conflent in Roussillon-Languedoc. The aim of the route is to retrace the path followed by thousands of Republican exiles in 1939, as they escaped into France at the end of the Spanish Civil War. The route takes in a wide range of landscapes, from the coast to the Pyrenees, culminating at the summit of Canigó.
As the North Track passes through La Selva it performs a traverse of over 60 kilometres from north to south through the whole of the district’s mountain region, crossing through the three major massifs of Montseny, Les Guilleries and Collsacabra. Throughout the route the wooded landscape is very much to the fore, including Mediterranean woodlands, such as holm oaks, and more humid woodlands populated by chestnut and ash trees, most of the land being protected within the Montseny Nature Park or the protected areas of Les Guilleries and Collsacabra.
