Amer
Amer is located in a small valley between the counties of La Selva and La Garrotxa, halfway between Girona and Olot. This municipality is shaped by the Brugent River Valley and the mouth where its water flows into the Ter River, in the flattest part of Sant Climent, below the Sant Roc Cliffs.
The town of Amer has grown around the mediaeval monastery complex and the old Girona - Olot road. Plaça de la Vila, an arcaded square, was originally the medieval marketplace. The square we see today is composed of contrasting buildings and arcades dating from the 19th century, making it a fascinating heritage site. The town boasts historical houses such as Casa de l’Abat (Can Boles), Can Mont and Can Gasull in the monastery complex, Can La in the Pedreguet district and Can Gultresa in Plaça de la Vila. Other important historical buildings include the imposing Rocasalva Tower (also known as the Tower of Sant Climent), the Church of Santa Maria with its Romanesque apses, and Casa de Can Terme, now home to the MEd’A (Ethnological Museum of Amer), which houses the Lluís Sidera permanent collection and rooms for temporary exhibitions.
Last but not least, Amer is a town with unique railway-related architectural heritage. Its railway station, an important stop on the old Girona-Olot Narrow-Gauge Railway, is now home to the Tourist and Citizen/Youth Information Centre. This building and its annexes are located right in the middle of the longest greenway in the Girona area.
