Anglès
The town of Anglès is located on the north-eastern side of the county of La Selva, right next to the county of Gironès. The main feature of this stunning setting is the large, flat valley through which the Ter River flows.
The town is perched on a small hill in the middle of the valley. The old quarter is located in the highest part of the town. It’s one of the best-preserved old quarters in Catalonia, featuring a wide variety of architectural styles with striking buildings. As you stroll along Carrer Major and the surrounding streets, you come across several historical buildings, the most important of which are Can Verdaguer, built over an arch and with large Romanesque windows, Can Cendra, built in the Catalan noucentista style and restored by Rafael Masó, and Can Camps, featuring large Gothic windows.
Anglès also boasts some very important industrial heritage. At the turn of the 20th century, the town’s economy was based on agriculture but the arrival of the Burés factory heralded a shift from farming to textile manufacturing. Today, the factory is a culture centre and museum that houses the Burés steam engine, the only steam engine in Europe preserved on its original site. It is well worth paying a visit to the museum to discover the town’s industrial past.
Last but not least, mention must be made of the many paths in the municipality of Anglès to be enjoyed on foot or by bike. It’s the perfect way to explore rural landscapes that offer wonderful views of the town. All the routes are signposted and the best-known path is the Girona-Olot Greenway.
