Riudarenes
Riudarenes is located in the centre of the county of La Selva. This small municipality is nestled in a volcanic setting of great geological interest, especially the L’Esparra area.
It boasts an extraordinarily rich landscape. In addition to its volcanic landscape, the town is located next to the Santa Coloma Stream, which means that the built-up area has gradually shifted, leaving the town church in the area closest to the water.
The most important architectural and heritage element of Riudarenes is the 12th-century Church of Sant Martí de Riudarenes, which features both baroque and neoclassical elements. It’s listed in the Architectural Heritage Inventory of Catalonia.
It has a Latin cross floor plan and opens onto the town square, Plaça del Diumenge, in the heart of the old quarter with its ancient manor houses. The square leads to Carrer Major and the shopping streets of Riudarenes.
There are plenty of attractions in the area surrounding the town, such as the Ca l’Agustí Rocks, with their fascinating shapes, the Chapel of Montcorb, the Argimon Sanctuary or the Puig Ardina Towers.
Important historical events have taken place in Riudarenes. In the Middle Ages it formed part of the possessions of the Viscounts of Cabrera. Later on it became bandit territory and was the scene of many of the adventures of the famous bandit Serrallonga, whose lover came from the area. Riudarenes was also the scene of events during the Reapers War, the Peninsular War or the Spanish Civil War.
Visitors to the area can enjoy several interesting routes, ranging from history trails to gastronomic routes or sports trails.
