Susqueda
Susqueda is a unique municipality in La Selva since the town itself was flooded in order to create the Susqueda Reservoir. As such, the municipality now comprises a group of hamlets: El Far, El Coll and Sant Martí Sacalm. The town of Susqueda lies submerged in the reservoir that was built in 1968 in the middle of the Ter Valley.
Although it’s a municipality without a main town, Susqueda boasts plenty of tourist attractions. This large natural area is a great place for hiking and mountain biking. There are several interconnecting paths between the hamlets with heritage points of interest.
From an architectural perspective, the main heritage attractions of Susqueda are the religious buildings located in the hamlets, such as the Parish Church of Sant Martí Sacalm, of Romanesque origin, at the feet of which the six houses that form the hamlet are distributed. The hamlet of El Far offers stunning panoramic views of the reservoir, the sub-county of Collsacabra and the Guilleries Massif. The 11th-century Sanctuary of Mare de Déu del Far is also well worth a visit. As for the hamlet of El Coll, the Sanctuary of Mare de Déu del Coll, built in the Romanesque style, is a must-see attraction.
The characteristics of the Susqueda Reservoir must also be mentioned. This reservoir of the Ter River covers a surface area of 466 hectares, with a volume of 233 hm3 and is considered a true feat of engineering. Susqueda is a double curvature concrete arch dam with galleries that cross its interior. It’s the third most important reservoir in Catalonia.
