Vilobí d’Onyar
Vilobí d’Onyar is a town in the county of La Selva that forms part of the urban area of Girona. It’s located on the western edge of the pre-coastal depression and has a flat landscape. This municipality comprises the town of Vilobí and the villages of Salitja and Sant Dalmai.
Thanks to the archaeological finds unearthed in Vilobí d’Onyar, we know that it’s a very ancient town dating back to the Palaeolithic period. The old town is full of history, with buildings such as the 13th-century Church of Sant Esteve, built in the baroque style, or Vilobí Castle, which dates from the 12th / 13th century. There are also old houses to visit, such as the 18th-century Can Roscada, now home to the Culture Centre and Municipal Library. Noteworthy attractions in the outskirts of the town include the Chapel of Santa Margarida, built in the Romanesque style, the Chapel of Sant Llop or the Chapel of Nostra Senyora de les Fonts. What’s more, a section of the Roman Via Augusta passes through this area.
Vilobí d’Onyar boasts some very rich natural surroundings, above all due to its volcanic soil. The most important feature of this area is the La Crosa Volcano, one of the largest and best-preserved volcanoes in Europe, with a perimeter measuring more than one kilometre. Here one can visit Les Guilloteres, an old volcanic clay mine that has been turned into an interpretation centre dedicated to the famous volcano.
One of the must-see natural attractions in the municipality is the Borra Lock. This small reservoir is located in Sant Dalmai and is home to some exceptional vegetation, with noteworthy plant species such as whitebeams, meadow fescue, violets or strawberry plants.
