Castle – Palace of the Viscounts of Cabrera
The port town of Blanes became the capital of the viscounty from the end of the 14th century, when the Cabrera family decided to transfer its residence from Montsoriu Castle to the Castle of Sant Joan (or Blanes Castle as it was known at the time). They were the driving force behind the urban development of the town and ordered the construction, in an outstanding location, of the town’s new church and the new residence of the viscounts, the castle-palace, which, together with the elegant Gothic Fountain, made Blanes the Gothic capital of the county.
Unfortunately, the palace, by then in the hands of the Montcada family (Counts of Aitona), was destroyed in the wars of the 17th century. Nevertheless, today we can still observe a large section of the façade, attached to the Parish Church of Santa Maria, featuring a doorway with voussoir arches and two Gothic windows on the first floor.
