The Santa Clotilde Gardens are located in a landscape of huge beauty. Set atop a cliff with striking views of the sea, this marvellous garden has been planted as a true example of the spirit which shaped the Noucentista fin de siècle movement in Catalonia, of which Eugeni d’Ors was an outstanding spokesman.
The gardens, designed in the manner of the gentle and yet austere gardens of the Italian Renaissance of the past, were designed by Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí at the age of 28, when he was still in the thrall of his master in the art of gardening, Forestier.
Here Rubió neglects the Hispano-Arabic lesson lost in a haze among the images of the French garden shown him by Forestier when working together on the gardens of Montjüic, instead shifting towards a revival of the Italian Renaissance spirit, as the essence of modernity.
